My Role At The Lit Shop Ltd
I’ve had a wonderful time creating my business The Lit Shop Ltd. I founded it in 2017 and it has grown from strength-to-strength since. I am a consulting literary manager for theatres or institutions that want a literary manager but on a consulting basis. It’s a particularly niche area of the theatrical profession.
A literary manager reads all the plays that come into a building, thinks about commissions and commissioning ideas, comes up with IP to adapt, gives notes on playwrights’ work, watches run-throughs of plays to give comments to the director, thinks about plays for particular actors to star in. It’s super varied and uses the academic brain and the ‘hey-guys-let’s put-on-a-show!’ brain.
Nobody has ‘done’ literary management quite like I am executing it. My clients are flung all over the world. I have four or five in the UK where I am based. I work with a Broadway theatre producer in New York; I have a couple clients in Canada and a few in Australia. I like to think that The Lit Shop Ltd’s underlying role is to amplify and push forward each Artistic Director’s vision as creatively as possible.
