Gökyüzü

Uber food: I love asking Uber drivers who are originally from other places where they go in London to eat food from their country. Time and again when I ask Turkish drivers they always mentioned Gökyüzü. The original one is in Green Lanes and sure enough, there is a massive outpost eight minutes from my mother-in-law’s house.

It is a temple to barbecue! Spread over three floors, you can smell smoking and singed meat the minute you get off the bus at Leisure Way. We had barbecued shrimp that were palm sized; blackened on the outside. Prizing the skin off they were bright pink and expertly cooked. My daughter and I shared chicken kabobs which are chopped up with barbecued and buttered home-made bread and drizzled with super full-fat Turkish yoghurt and tomato sauce; blackened and burned green marmara peppers make a cross on top of this food mountain. Every table had a shaker of Aleppo pepper on it — I am in love.
